Aleksej Iskos

Aleksej Iskos is a Copenhagen-based designer, originally from Ukraine, and a graduate of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design.

After co-founding Iskos-Berlin Design in 2010, he established his own studio, Iskos Design, in 2018. 

Iskos draws inspiration from everyday materials, such as the knitwear that sparked the idea for the Mollis lamp. His approach to design emphasizes simplicity and functionality, blending timeless forms with innovative techniques.

Mollis

While most pendants are made of glass or metal, Mollis is knitted in 3D. The knitted lampshade is pulled over a metal frame, a bit like, well … a pullover. It’s a very simple construction with minimal material consumption, and the shade can be easily removed to be washed or replaced.

Most of the LED light is effectively directed downwards, but the light is also diffused by the fabric and provides a soft ambience to the room. The knitted pattern lets the light through and emphasizes the shape and the architectural character of the lamp.

The name Mollis comes from Latin and means "soft" - it refers to both the lamp's material and the quality of the light. Soft, elegant and understated - Mollis is timeless like a cathedral dome – if the dome was knitted, that is.

Inspiration

What was the inspiration behind the Mollis lamp, and was there a specific moment or observation that sparked the idea for its design?

"It was first and foremost the material that gave me the idea for Mollis lamp. After all, knitwear is used in clothing, so it felt logical to create a design where the lamp is "dressed up" with a knitted shade. It is this kind of everyday thoughts and observations that often inspire the new designs. Even the simplest aspects of everyday living, like getting dressed in the morning, can provide an aha moment."
