Boris Berlin

Boris Berlin, one of the most accomplished designers working in Copenhagen today and is a founding partner of Boris Berlin Design, Komplot Design and Iskos-Berlin Design. The geography of his clients spreads from Denmark and Sweden to USA and Japan. He has won numerous design awards and his works are part of the collections of several museums, including the Designmuseum Denmark, Die Neue Sammlung in Munich, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, V&A in London, Vitra Design Museum, etc. He views design as a form of storytelling revealing the essence of objects: “I think the best design is one you recognize, though you have never seen it before”

Flying

FLYING is a family of sculptural pendant lamps with a soft organic shape. When suspended, they appear to float beautifully in the air. FLYING lamps are designed, made and distributed with sustainability in mind. The lampshade is created via a 3D knitting process directly from yarn to the final product, so no material is wasted. The LED light source is built into the top of the lamp so the light is softly diffused through the knitted bottom part of the lamp. FLYING lamps are also flat-packed in cardboard, making them compact and therefore more sustainable in terms of transport and distribution.

” Made by Hand has challenged me asking to design a big decorative sculptural lamp series for the high-end extension of their collection...

It was natural for me to base the design on my experience with 3D knitting technology accumulated during Knit-wits development. But in FLYING, I wanted to expand it to the ultimate use of knittings' physical properties by stretching it between the waving aluminium frame and the centerpiece of the lamp. The biomorphic sculptural shape of the lamp being pendant in the room is "flying"- hovering in the air...

It’s been a pleasure to collaborate with Made by Hand on the development and production of the FLYING lamps, and especially the knitting design has been an exciting challenge...
It was also vital for me as a designer and for Made by Hand as a brand to address sustainability: FLYING lamp was clearly and well thought out from the production to transport, from the assembly to recycling”.
