At Hotel Sonnschein in Tyrol, interior designer Alina Plunger of Leinou.Studio has created a spa that harmonizes with its breathtaking natural surroundings. In this Q&A, she shares insights into her design process and the role of Made by Hand’s RO collection in shaping the atmosphere.
Can you tell us a bit about the story behind this project and what inspired your vision for the spa at Hotel Sonnschein?
“Three years ago, I had the privilege of winning this project. Initially, my goal was to design a spa that evokes harmony and delivers a ‘wow effect’ for guests from the moment they enter. I focused on creating innovative elements not seen in other hotels while utilizing natural materials to connect with the beautiful Tyrolean landscape.”
What characteristics of the surrounding area influenced your approach to designing the spa?
“Being surrounded by such stunning nature, it was important that the interior reflected this. I carefully selected reclaimed wood, fabrics, and lighting that aligned with the natural beauty of Tyrol.”
How did the RO pendants lights contribute to the ambiance?
“The variety of the sizes allowed me to play with different compositions. In the spa area, I arranged them in a dynamic pattern, while in the relaxation room, I opted for a geometric grid to emphasize calmness and structure.”
Can you tell us more about the unique ceiling design and how it interacts with the RO pendants?
“I designed the curved ceiling to reflect nature’s fluidity. Combined with indirect lighting, it creates a floating effect that highlights the RO lamps. This design was awarded first place in Europe for ceiling design, which I am very proud of.”
What role does lightning play in achieving the sense of calmness in this spa environment?
“Lightning is essential in setting the mood. By adjusting brightness, color, and placement, I was able to emphasize certain areas and enhance the overall relaxing ambiance.”
How does the design of the lounge area align with the aesthetics of the RO lamps?
“The lounge area was designed to complement the organic forms of the ceiling and RO lamps. I selected bold natural tones to create a striking yet harmonious focal point that enhances the spa's inviting atmosphere.”
Could you tell us about your studio, Leinou.Studio?
“I've been working independently for over four years, and I love creating spaces that tell a story. My main focus is hotel designs and luxury residences, and I thrive on planning every detail to bring unique concepts to life.”

“Yes! I have several exiting projects ahead, all unique in their own way, which will continue to challenge and inspire me.”
